WHAT IS MONTESSORI? - HOW THE MONTESSORI METHOD WORKS

“I have studied the child. I have taken what the child has given me and expressed it and that is what is called the Montessori Method.” – Maria Montessori

The Montessori approach was designed to help children grow by letting them explore the world around them. Classrooms are called “prepared environments” where children’s inner soul for learning is encouraged, allowing them opportunities to choose among an array of purposeful activities to work on, with the guidance of a trained adult.

Through Montessori work, children are able to develop concentration and self-discipline by following the work process outlined by the teacher, also called the “Directress”. Children progress at their own pace, according to their capabilities and inclinations.

A unique element of the Montessori program which sets it apart from traditional teaching methods is the “decentralization of the teacher”. Rather than being the centre of attention in a classroom, the teacher’s task is to observe and to intervene from the sidelines, essentially the ‘keeper’ of the environment, letting children get on with their activities, guiding and intervening only when necessary.

The following learning areas are covered in the classroom: Practical Life, Sensorial, Mathematics, Language, Culture, Art

6-18months – Our infants prepared environment allows the child to exercise their ‘absorbent mind’, which incorporates experiences, relations, emotions, images, language and culture through their senses and stimulated living. This is the period in which the child does in the psychological sphere what the embryo did in the physical sphere.

18-36months – Toddlers explore development of speech, coordinated movement and independence, which gives the child confidence and allows them to discover their own potential and sense of place within a community.

3-6years –These preschoolers experiment in the building of multiple aspects of their beings and minds. The classroom environment creates opportunity to grow and develop in practical, sensorial, language and mathematical areas. Learners teach themselves how to think, rather than what to think.
